Chemo Day

April 12, 2010 at 12:39 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

Today is the first day of the third cycle. Lots of drama to get to this point, but like most “face the music” days, the bark turned out to be louder than the bite. Good numbers on he blood tests gave the day a positive start, so the mood is one of optimism, which is refreshing.

Still, the grind is in full swing – we’ve been in this for 9 weeks and have about 12 to go. Not quite the halfway point – that will happen in about 10 days.

As for me, I’m back to mostly vegetarian, which feels far more healthy, and am getting some exercise, which is good. Still having trouble writing, though, ad having general trouble focusing. I guess the stress is the stress… and will continue pretty-much unabated for a while.

Ah well, at least all is headed in the right direction…

hospitals…

Now at Cedars for the port placement. The surgery went well, but the concern is still there. Of course, that will be there for a long time… But at least she now nows that she can forget about it for a while and nothing bad will automatically happen. This is a good start I hope…

Trying to Reason with Next Fencing Season

July 21, 2008 at 12:45 pm (NACs) (, , )

So, next season is coming up.  First event is in Columbus, OH – a one-day turnaround.  The kid, now well-ensconsed in the top 16 of the age group above, has a later start than I do…  should I fence in Div II?  I’ll last a pool and a DE or two… or should I simply go as coach-dad-chauffeur.  Not sure yet.

Next stop will be St. Louis – we’re really doing the post-industrial disease tour this year.  Oh, joy!

Summer Training

July 14, 2008 at 6:30 pm (Uncategorized)

Once again, the heat of summer is oppressing me.  I hate heat.  Why, then, do I live in LA?  Good question.

Right now, I wish I lived in Pacific Heights, near San Francisco, or in Portland or Seattle – places where the weather is milder, the chaos factor seems lower, and life seems simpler.

Perhaps things are just a bit too complex now, with trying to get the business going, keeping some semblance of fencing happening, and chasing around the kids.  Being 50 and at the crux of it all just makes me want to hide sometime.

Still, nationals had some high points, and as I segue into a more significant administrative role, the future is hazy, but there.  We just have to hope that the world situation evens out at some point…

The beginning – after the end

July 13, 2008 at 7:33 am (Uncategorized)

OK… Nationals are over.  A great venue, a reasonable performance by the gang of three, good work refereeing, and difficult politics.

The upcoming year brings with it many questions… will the daughter continue her upward trajectory?  Will the son begin his growth spurt and cease being overmatched by people 8 months older than him?  Will the father (me) continue to plod along or finally put the pedal to the metal and make a concerted effort to improve.

Will the politics out west relent enough to actually make something happen and make a difference?  Will the crappy economy begin to be reflected in turnouts?

In short, how many more flechewounds will I suffer?
